The Importance of Hydration
Why is it water important?
Water is the single most critical nutrient for health, growth, and development.
Water makes up 70% of your body and it is vital for your survival. Every cell, tissue and organ requires water to function correctly.
It regulates our temperature, protects our vital organs, helps with digestion and transport nutrients to your muscles and organs and a whole host more.
Each person is different when it comes to how much water they should consume. A general rule is 1 litre of water to every 50lb you weigh. For example if you weigh 150lb you should drink at least 3 litres of water. In addition you should add 1 litre of water for every hour of exercise. Although if you’re a person who perspires easily you need to drink more water, as you will generally lose more water then the average person.
The easiest way to tell if you’re dehydrated is the colour of your urine. A pale yellow to clear indicates you’re well hydrated. Yellow to darker urine implies you have a form of dehydration. When you’re “thirsty” you actually already have a form of dehydration.
Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink!
There are many health benefits of being well hydrated such as healthy skin, hair and teeth. Water can help with weight loss as it improves the digestive process, decrease appetite and increase the body’s ability to metabolize stored fat. Water also aids in muscle growth as it helps build the structures of protein, which is essentially what your muscles are made of.
There are plenty of side effects of being dehydrated such as low energy, exhaustion, sleepy, fatigue, hunger, headaches, and loss of muscle strength and performance.
Another reminder to always drink your water from a BPA Free water bottle, look for the markings, don’t always drink from that same plastic bottle.
Make sure you stay well hydrated for optimum results and for your general health and well being!
